Clifford was born in Carter County, Kentucky. His parents were Hile Brickles and Barbara Ellen Swim.
He married Elizabeth Ann Mynheir in 1934 in Logan, W. Va. It wasn't exactly a "shotgun wedding", but her family always enjoyed hearing the story of how they eloped, and the young newlyweds had to hide out for a time from her daddy and brothers who were not far behind them with their shotguns. Within the next 13 years they were blessed with five children.

In 1952, Clifford and Elizabeth loaded up a gray Dodge with their five children and personal belongings. They left their home in West Virginia and traveled some 2,500 miles to Butte. Most of Elizabeth's siblings were either already in Butte or soon followed. Unfortunately, shortly after moving to Butte, Clifford was killed in an accident at the Kelley Mine; that sad day was Sept. 10, 1955. He was only 42 and lived to enjoy only one of his 20 grand- children, most of whom were born in Butte.
