Edward Larkey Hofacket grew up in Texas and Indian Territory. At age 17, as the oldest son of 12 children, he helped his father move the family to Tillman County, Oklahoma Territory where they settled six miles west of Chattanooga. There he met Hetha Owen and they were married 17 Dec 1910.

When WWI was declared, Ed enlisted but was discharged five days later when the army learned that he had vision in only one eye. Ed alternately farmed and operated a dray line in Chattanooga, Fletcher, Sterling, and Blanchard. At one point he hired a man to run his dray line while he worked long hours as a freight agent for the railroad. He developed rheumatism and was almost an invalid when the doctors told him the hot, dry weather of west Texas might help.

In December of 1924 Ed bought 320 acres in Hockley County, Texas and moved his family on a three day trip in the family truck. They made a half dug-out on the virgin land and farmed until Ed was elected Sheriff of Hockley County in 1936.

In Ed's twelve years as sheriff he arrested men in almost every state, and on every imaginable charge, including two men who robbed Levelland banks. In his first six years it is said that he made over 700 arrests and all either pled guilty or were convicted when tried. Though he had carried a gun since he was a youngster herding cattle, he never had to use one, and never came to any harm. He later served as Chief of Police and as Mayor of Levelland. He was active in real estate until retiring in 1970.

He served on the Levelland School Board and was a member of the Levelland Masonic Lodge. He and Hetha were both active in the Fifth Street Baptist Church.
