Mother of Joseph, Edward, George, Alphonse, Max, Henry, Frances and Cecelia Berktold.
After her husband Edward died in 1917, Mary married the "boarder" at her house, George Peklar, and son Rudy was born in 1922. There may have been another Peklar baby that died. According to family members, George may have been a relative of the Berktold/Peternell family but I haven't found a connection yet.
Mary died in 1923 from a cerebral hemorrhage (stroke) in her home at 4910 W. 31st Street in Cicero Illinois. She is buried in the large family plot with her parents, sister Frances, husbands Edward Berktold and George Peklar, son Henry and other members of the family.
There are no headstones or monuments on any of the graves.
George Peklar died in 1927. The children had already been separated and placed in various foster homes. The oldest boys were able to take care of themselves, but the three youngest children, Frances and Cecelia Berktold and Rudy Peklar first went to my grandmother, Susan Jourdan Peternell's home, in Berwyn, Illinois. Susan was suffering through a very difficult pregnancy at that same time and the traumatic loss of her young brother, and after a period of several months she was no longer well enough to handle her own children and the three foster children. Frances, Celie and Rudy were moved to live with Katie Jourdan Padecky, who was Susan's sister, in Pentwater Michigan. The three children lived with Katie and her family for the rest of their growing up years, and married, settling in Michigan with their families.
Owner of the lot is my uncle Edward Berktold
