In February of 1851, Reuben was born to Bartlett S and Dicey Watts in Smith County, Texas where his father was farming. By August of 1960, they had moved to the neighboring county of Wood and Bartlett was working at a saw mill. After the Civil War started, Bartlett enlisted in the Confederate Army in the Twenty-second (Hubbard's) Infantry. No more is found about Bartlett or Dicey after that. Presumably they are dead by 1870, when Reuben (age 18) and brother Theodore and sisters Sarah and Dica are living with their older sister Margaret and her husband James M. Rozzella in Hillsboro, Hill County, Texas. About 1876/7. Reuben married Martha Jane "Annie" Green most likely in Hill County where she had been living as well. By June of 1880, Reuben and Annie were living in Palo Pinto County, Texas with the first two of their five children, James and Cora. Reuben was working for the rail road. Annie died sometime between 1890 when the last of their children was born and 4 November 1894 when Reuben married Rosa Annie Carothers Brown, the widow of John W. Brown (1865-1893). They married in Hill County and by June of 1900 they were living in Mangum Township, Greer County, Oklahoma. Enumerated with them at that time were Reuben's two children from his first marriage (daughter Willie, age 11 and son Robert, age nine), Reuben and Rosa's two children (Reuben Howard, age four and daughter Ola, age one), and Rosa's daughter from her first marriage (Nonnie Brown, age seven).
At the time of his death in 1908, probate documents said that he left no widow and that his sole heirs were J. Porter Watts, age 30, of Erick, Cora Owens(sic), age 28, of Reed, Greer County, OK, Joseph L Watts, age 26, of Erick, Robert E (sic) Watts, age 17, of Erick, and (Reuben) Howard, age 12 of Erick. J.P. Watts was the listed guardian of Howard. No mention was made of his wife Rosa or daughter Ola from the 1900 census. Reuben died intestate since no will was found. Joseph Watts was the court appointed executor. After all debts were paid, each heir received $33.50. Mention was made of Reuben's interest in "R. F. Watts & Co" valued at $400 and "Watts, Coffey Coal Co". He had no real estate.
Reuben's burial location is not known at this time.
