He first appeared in the Washington County tax schedules charged with owning land on Hardin's Creek, 50 acres which approached 1,000 acres by the time of his death. He lived in a log cabin on a high bank of land which sloped down to Hardin's Creek about 1-1/2 miles north of the present location of St. Charles Church. Besides farming, he also assisted in surveying and building roads in early Washington County.
