For many years he was prominent in the Rhode Island State Militia, having enrolled as a Private in the First Light Infantry Company on Oct 21,1856. He received many promotions, and he was elected Colonel of the First Light Infantry Veterans in May 1895, and for three subsequent years.

He married Harriet Sheldon on Sep 28,1859.

Children: Fanny Sheldon Jencks Howe, Alice Rogers Jencks Fuller, Anna Bates Jenckes, Howard Whitney Jencks, and John Cadman Jencks.
