Hiram McFarlane born April 25, 1877 in Salt Lake City. His parent were Alexander and Elizabeth Williams Grant McFarlane. His family lived in Millcreek and Farmer Utah. Alexander and Elizabeth were the parents of 7 children. Alfreda, Alexander, Hiram, Laura, Arthur, Winifred

His father Alexander McFarlane, Jr. was a teacher by trade and arrived with his parents Alexander McFarlane, Sr. and Mary Chisholm .

Hiram's chores on the family farm included helping his father heard sheep.

Hiram began his work career with the telephone company. His job sent him to Ephraim where he met Dora Ann Rasmussen. Dora's family arrived in Salt Lake from Denmark.

Hiram and Dora were married Nov 13 1900 in Manti, UT. They began their married life in Mecurer where Hiram worked in the gold mines. They welcomed their son Elden Bent Nov 18 1901.

The family moved to Salt Lake City where Hiram continued to work for the telephone company. They welcomed their daughter Fern Elizabeth Jun 14 1904 and their second son Charles Emerson "Chick" June 26 1907.

Hiram at his father and brothers counsel purchased a farm in Bluffdate located at 14036 South and 2200 West. The farm house consisted of two large rooms and a pantry for their family of 5. There were no lights or running water. Their neighbors consisted of three homes, theirs, Uncle Alex's and 1 other neighbor. Over the years four more children were born, Ruth Oct 28 1909, Lucile born Jan 1 1913, Hardy Mont born Jun 14 1915 and then Cassie Louise born Mar 1 1918. In addition to adding the children Hiram built a kitchen and a bedroom. Couple years later Hiram added a bathroom with running water.

Work was never ending on the farm. They raised hay, grain, sugar beets and potatoes. Their were fruit trees and a large garden. Later came a dairy herd and the milk was sold to Clover Leaf Dairy. There were chicken coops to tend filled with laying hens.


Hiram died at the Salt Lake City home of his daughter Fern McFarlane Cooley from a heart attack.
