US Congressman. A member of the Republican Party, he served Oregon's 2nd Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives from 1983 until 1995 and from 1997 until 1999. His father was a physician, he received his Bachelor or Arts degree from Willamette University and went on to run his family's ranch following his parent's deaths. He began his career in politics when he was elected to and served in the Oregon House of Representatives from 1961 until 1973 and in Oregon's State Senate from 1973 until 1982. He briefly retired in 1995, however he recaptured his old Congressional seat when he defeated Wes Cooley in 1997. During his tenure in Washington, Smith served as the Chair of the House Agriculture Committee from 1997 until 1999.
