James Harold Patterson, 78, known as “Jimmy”, and to his close family as “Pat-Pat”, passed away on Friday, September 18, 2020 in Sentara Albemarle Hospital, Elizabeth City.
Mr. Patterson was born in Washington, DC on January 26, 1942, and was the son of the late Margaret Spruill Patterson. Jimmy was raised and nurtured by his mother and maternal grandfather, Clarence Spruill.
For 47 years he was employed by the Town of Edenton in the Public Works Department. During this tenure, he spent two years serving in the US Army during the Vietnam War. A member and past president of the Edenton Jaycees, he was also a member of Edenton Baptist Church.
Jimmy enjoyed sports, playing baseball, and coaching a women’s volleyball team in his early years. Later in life, it was golf and watching teams from his recliner. He had a passion for animals and was devoted to his beagle, Ella Rose.
Surviving are his best friend of 26 years, Sharon Keeter; and Mark Alligood and Mike Patterson, along with six grandchildren, Connor and Sara Alligood, Addie and Kennedy Bell, and Joey and Riley Patterson. He was preceded in death by Lesley Bell, known to him as his “favorite girl”.
A memorial service will be held Sunday at 2:00 p.m. in Beaver Hill Cemetery and will be conducted by the Rev. David Brooks. The family has requested no home visitation, or visitation following the service, due to the Covid-19 Pandemic and their concern for the safety and health of friends.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Tri-County Animal Shelter, 138 Icaria Road, Tyner, NC 27980.
