Milton “Tiny” Abbott died
Aug. 10 in Napa at age 79. He was a native of Fieldbrook and a resident of Napa.
The son of the late George and Margareta Abbott, Mr. Abbott was born in Fieldbrook on
Dec. 8, 1905. His family moved to
Luffenholtz in 1906, and after a fire destroyed the town in 1908, they moved back to Fieldbrook.
Graduating from Fieldbrook School in 1919, Mr. Abbott then went to work for Dolbeer and Carson on their ranch in Fieldbrook. He worked there until his marriage to Ernestine Colby in 1929.
Later he purchased the Mahoney ranch at West End, across the river from Blue Lake, and ran a dairy ranch. After selling his ranch, he went to work for Hammond Lumber Co. on a rigging crew. In September 1940, he moved to Napa and went to work at the Mare Island Navy Shipyard on a rigging crew.
He retired in 1968, after 27 years of service.
Mr. Abbott gained a reputation during the late 1930’s for his boxing career. He distinguished himself in the boxing world by knocking out Max Baer, who later became the heavyweight boxing champion of the world.
Mr. Abbott was a member of the I.O.O.F., the R.O.P.E., and an active member of the Presbyterian Church of Napa.
After his retirement, he enjoyed traveling.
Mr. Abbott’s wife, Ernestine, died in 1967, and he later married Ernestine’s sister, Amy White.
