James Snedigar was a City Police Officer in Chandler, Arizona, a suburb of Phoenix. He graduated from Marcos DeNiza High School in Tempe, Arizona, where he was involved in Track and Football. He attended Central Arizona College and the University of Montana. He also served in the Army and was stationed at Fort Benning, Georgia. He served for 5 years in the Police Force, dying in the line of duty at age 38. Officer Snedigar was performing a S.W.A.T. raid on armed robbery suspects. The suspects had been chased to an Apartment Complex after robbing a Jewelery Store, in Tempe, Arizona. They forced their way into an apartment, where they holed up. The S.W.A.T. team tossed in stun grenades, but were met by gunfire. Officer Snedigar was in body armor and was the point man. As he forced his way into the apartment, he was struck by a bullet. Other Officers returned fire, killing one of the suspects, who was wearing a bullet-proof vest. Officer Snedigar was the first Police Officer to be killed in the line of duty, in Chandler. He was survived by his wife, Dawn, two daughters, Tarrah and Kathleen, a son, Rupert, his mother, Lorna, a sister, Sally, and his brother, Doby Joe.
