She graduated valedictorian of Lineville High School and attended nursing school in Des Moines, Iowa, where she met and married the love of her life, Randy Flugum in 1956. They had 2 children, Cindy and Jim. In 1960 the family moved to California, eventually settling in Santa Clara in 1965. Joyce was a homemaker, raising her kids and becoming an "Avon Lady" for a short while. Her big heart and big smile left a lasting impression on everyone she encountered. She enjoyed their frequent and regular camping trips with the family, which took them all over the western US.
In 1988, Joyce and Randy retired and moved to Bend, Oregon. Three years later they became full-time RVer's, traveling all over the United States and Canada, attending the Calgary Stampede many times, which Joyce thoroughly enjoyed. They spent a lot of time in Bodega Bay to be close to their son and daughter-in-law and the two new loves of Joyce's life, granddaughters Kelly and Mary Kate.
In 2010, they returned to Oregon to be near their daughter in Salem as Joyce's battle with Alzheimer's progressed. In 2011 Joyce moved into Hawthorne House in NE Salem, where she was lovingly cared for until shortly before her death. Through her journey with the disease, she always flashed her contagious smile at everyone.
She is survived by her husband Randy of 60 years, daughter Cindy Flugum (Sherry Therens) of Salem, son Jim Flugum (Patty) of Bodega Bay, California, and granddaughters Kelly and Mary Kate. Memorial services were held Saturday, April 29, 2017, at City View Funeral Home in Salem. Donations are suggested to Willamette Valley Hospice or to the Alzheimer's Association.
