Dorothy G. Pettit went to be with her Lord on September 10, 2007, as a result of an accident in Black Mountain, North Carolina. She was born on November 8, 1920, in Meridian, Mississippi. Left to cherish her memory are her husband Max Pettit; her children, Russell Hicks, Ken Hicks, Cecilia Grossmann, Ed Pettit, Jim Pettit, Carole Petiet, and David Pettit; her grandchildren; her brother-in-law and sister Bill and Mary Elizabeth Lynn; her sister-in-law Rosemary Gilbert. Dorothy earned a Master's degree in English from Baylor University and went on to serve as a missionary for the Foreign Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention in Chile until the death of her first husband, Marlin Hicks. She and her family then moved to El Paso, where she later married Max Pettit, and where she worked in the Art Department of the Baptist Spanish Publishing House until her retirement. Since her retirement, Max and Dorothy have been involved in ministry with Chinese people in El Paso and have traveled extensively. She will be remembered for her servant's heart, her artistic abilities, her sense of humor, her love for people, her banana bread, and for her genuine warmth and hospitality. Visitation will be at Sunset Funeral Homes-Northeast at 4631 Hondo Pass from 4:00-8:00 pm on Sunday, September 16. A celebration of Dorothy's life will be held at the First Baptist Church of El Paso located at 805 Montana Avenue at 10:00 am on Monday, September 17. A graveside service will follow at Restlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the Max and Dorothy Pettit Chinese Missions Foundation.
