Sterling resident Ruth Bolen , 86, died June 30, 2007, at Central Peninsula General Hospital in Soldotna. A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Anchorage Funeral Home. A graveside service will follow at Angelus Memorial Park. In honor of her wishes, a celebration of life will take place on the Kenai Peninsula at a later date.

Ruth was born Oct. 5, 1920, in Indianapolis, to Doris and Ada (Hastings) McMurtry. She attended school in Indiana. Ruth met her future husband while working in Indianapolis. She married Gerald Bolen on Nov. 15, 1941. Gerald, Ruth and daughter, Linda, traveled to Anchorage in 1948. Ruth and her husband lived in Anchorage before moving to their home on the Kenai River in 1991. Her family wrote: " Ruth was very loved by her family and friends. She had an unwavering faith in God and prayed for everyone. She enjoyed spending time at their home on the Kenai River, tending to her flowers and feeding the birds. She adored cats and cared for many in her lifetime. She also enjoyed painting, reading and getting her hair styled by Gloria. Her favorite color was purple. Ruth never met a stranger and was a 'grandma' to so many people. "We will remember her as a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and (for) her strong faith in God and love for her family." Ruth was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Gerald; parents; and brother, James.

She is survived by her daughter and husband, Linda and Gary Overstad; grandson, Bill Smith; grandson and granddaughter-in-law, Chuck and Kahlene Smith; granddaughter, Angela Summerhays; granddaughter and grandson in-law, Laura and Mark Mahoric; great-grandchildren, Angela, Billy, Jonathon and Charlie Smith, Jessica, Jeff, Steven, Chad and Loralisa Summerhays, and Matthew and Joseph Mahoric; brothers and sisters-in-law, James and Mary Ann Bolen , Sarah Mitchell, Billie Jolly and Jean Bolen ; and close friends and extended family, Kathy, Joey and Sam Brow, the Brow family, the Tvenstrups family, Bob and Debbie Pepper, Ron Summerhays and Fern Tharp. In lieu of flowers, her family requests that donations be made to a charity of choice or the SPCA in recognition of her generous spirit and love for animals.
