In 1862, he enlisted in the U. S. military service and served about one year when he and his brother were taken prisoner by a band of guerillas. They were both shot, his brother being killed instantly, and he at the time was left for dead.
After his return from the service he studied law in Cohoction in this county and at Dansville in Livingston county. Soon after entering the legal profession, he received a call to the ministry of the Baptist church, which he accepted and in which calling he was engaged for upward of 20 years. While in the ministry he became interested in the prosecution of pension claims and this business so increased that in 1875 he established a pension attorneys office in Buffalo, which at the time of his death was widely known as the firm of W. H. Peck & Son.
Mr. Peck leaves surviving his widow; two sons, Elwood Peck of Buffalo, Edwin J. Peck of Great Falls, Montana; Mrs. Arthur Aldrich of Tuscarara and Mrs. Archie Land of Springville, N.Y.
Mr. Peck was of a genial nature and always had a smile and a good word for all he met and his death will be mourned by all.
The funeral was held at his late residence. Rev. Towner, of Springfield, assisted by Rev. J. H. Cheesman, of this place. The burial was at Elmlawn Cemetery, Buffalo." Greenwood Times, May 21, 1909
