Both the Hammer and the Griffin families were early pioneers of Davie. Mr. Hammer served in the Florida National Guard from 1929 to 1935; he was a Davie businessman from 1935 to 1982. He and his brother, Ed Hammer, cultivated the first St. Augustine Bitter Blue Sod in Broward County. All of his sisters (6) and brothers (5), and their spouses, are deceased. There are 18 surviving nieces and nephews in the Hammer family, and there are many more, from the Griffin family surviving him, along with their offspring. There will be a Celebration of Life Service at Forest Lawn Funeral Home in Davie on June 7, at 11:00 am.
