She died after a sudden illness on July 14, 2006, at Wyoming Medical Center.

She was born April 22, 1925, on her grandfather's farm in Todd County, S.D., to Marie VandenBos and James Wesley Richards.

They immigrated to Casper to participate in the booming oil economy. She graduated from Natrona County High School in 1944.

She married Eugene A. "Swede" Brummond on Feb. 1, 1947, in Douglas. They raised five children.

She enjoyed her work in the Natrona County Extension Homemaker's clubs, participating actively for 50 years.

In 1957, she became active in 4-H and was proud to be a leader and Key leader for 49 years, teaching two generations of her own family and many other youngsters the finer points of the domestic arts and critical thinking.

After her husband died suddenly in 1979, she went back to school and earned an associate's degree in business from Casper College and worked for Amoco Credit Union.

She met John R. Hixson and they were married Dec. 5, 1981. They blended their existing families with the addition of his daughter and started a new life together that included traveling across much of the United States.

She was very active in volunteer community projects, including Neighborhood Housing Services, Casper Visitor's Bureau, Historic Trails Interpretive Center, the collaborative project for the Amoco Refinery cleanup, Master Gardeners, Amoco Annuitants and her favorite extension club, The Jolly Baker's Dozen.

Survivors include her husband of 25 years, five children, Kathryn Marie, Evelyn Anne, Eugene Allen Jr., Carol Sue and James Wesley; one stepdaughter, Coni; 11 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, two brothers, Wesley Richards of Casa Grande, Ariz., and Delbert Richards of Casper and one sister, Darlene McKinzie of Casper.
