Sarah Ann Layman was the daughter of Joe akin Layman and Sarah Ella Litsey of Grayson County, Kentucky. She was born there on February 27, 1844. Her paternal grandparents were Michael Layman and Sarah Storm of Grayson County. Her maternal grandparents were James Litsey and Mary Storm. The Storm ladies were sisters and the daughters of John Storm, who served in the Revolutionary War, and John's unknown first wife.

Sarah Ann Layman was the second wife of Civil War Corporal Mahue Bratcher, the son of John W. Bratcher and Sarah B. Barton. They were married about 1871 and were the parents of known children: Lydia F., Joseph, Mary J. and Charles Bratcher by the 1880 census. Sarah Ann Bratcher died of Chronic Pulmanary Tuberlousis on February 4, 1913 in Millwood, Grayson County, Kentucky and was buried there on February 5, 1913 in the Old Caney Church Cemetery in Grayson County. Her husband Hayhugh Bratcher died on June 23, 1918 in Grayson County, Kentucky and was buried in the Hopewell Cemetery there.
