Obituary Graveside services for Emma Maddox Hughes, 96, who died Saturday morning at Eventide, were held today (Tuesday) in Aztec. Mrs. Hughes was born Sept. 10, 1882, in Illinois, the oldest of eight children born to Thomas and Ella Maddox. The family came by oxcart to Colorado Springs and a year later to Aztec, N.M., where her father homesteaded and established the Aztec Fruit Gardens. He also published the Aztec Independent in the early 1900s. Mrs. Hughes was preceded in death by four sons and a daughter. She is survived by a daughter, June Lynch, Durango; brother, Mark Maddox, Farmington; sisters, Virginia Durkhoop and Edith Bell, both of San Diego, Calif. sixteen grandchildren; 44 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-granddaughter also survive. Two of her grandchildren, Maureen Lynch, and Casey Lynch, live in Durango.

Mrs. Hughes was the mother of Mrs. June Lynch and the grandmother of Ben Larry Lynch. Over the years she visited here often and was very well known to many residents of the community.
NOTE: Emma was married first to Frank Gardner Hughes who preceded her in death in 1936. She later married then divorced Ben Lynch Sr., whose son Ben Lynch Jr later became Emma's son in law.
