Inez Sherrill Heffner was born in Granite Falls. She graduated from Shelby School of Nursing with her RN in 1941. She worked at Charlotte Memorial Hospital and then joined the Army with a group of nurses from Charlotte Memorial. She served at the 234th Hospital in Chabua, Assam, India. After the war she married Kenneth Heffner, USN. They moved to Winston-Salem, where she received her nurse-anesthetist degree. She worked in the Hickory Hospital and stayed in the Army Reserves until reaching the rank of Captain. Her husband Kenneth Heffner predeceased her.
