Mrs. Mary Heller, 80, widow of Charles Heller, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Joseph Berkley, 676 Julian Avenue, Thursday night at 6:45 o'clock. Death following a short illness.
She was born in Galena, Illinois, Feb 17, 1857, the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Christ Kern, Galena pioneers. For a number of years she lived in East Dubuque, Illinois and for the past 34 years she has been a resident of Dubuque. She was married to Charles Heller in Galena.
Her survivors are four sons, Charles of East Dubuque, William of Littleport, Ia., Harry of Butte, Montana, and Edward W. of Dubuque; three daughters, Mrs. Wallace Drake of Seattle, Wash., and Mrs. Joseph Berkley and Mrs. Viola Hall, both of Dubuque; five great grandchildren; two brothers, Christ Kern of Minneapolis, Minn., and John Kern of Galena, Ill.
She was preceded in death by her husband; two daughters, Mrs. William King and Mrs. Robert Moffatt; and one son Leo. Her husband died 39 years ago.
Mrs. Heller was a member of St. Matthews Lutheran Church.
The body is at the Eaglehof Home for Funerals, where services will be held Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock. The Rev. H.L. Daugs, pastor of St Matthews Lutheran Church, will officiate.
Burial will be in the East Dubuque Cemetery.

Note: A recent ancestry.com DNA test done by 3 cousins shows 2 cousins related to the Kern line, but not the 3rd cousin (who is a descendant of Mary). Oral history says Mary was adopted, and of course she was born a year before her parents married. New findings will need to be uncovered.
