William Dillard Goodpasture was born on October 22, 1885 in Livingston, Overton County, Tennessee, and he was the son of Reverend John Ridley Goodpasture (1854–1927) and and his wife Sara Ann "Sallie" (Lansden) Goodpasture (1862–1941).

He was married in 1919 at the 2nd husband of Olivia (Williamson) Connell, who was born in Wilson County, Tennessee, the daughter of J W Williamson.

A long time member of Andrew Price Methodist Church, a 32nd degree Mason and owner of Donelson Coal Company for 30 years, William retired about 1955. He was 74 years old and married when he had a heart attack and died at home on September 2, 1960.

Survivors included his widow Olivia, brothers James "Ridley" Goodpasture in Brentwood, Tennessee, Frank Goodpasture of Bristol, Tennessee and Henry Goodpasture and Robert Goodpasture at Nashville, and sisters Mrs William Jesse Core and Mrs Thomas Jennings Hyde in Nashville.

Funeral Services were held on September 5th, and burial was in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Nashville.
