Ma Nell grew up in the Sturdivant's Crossroads community and graduated from Marshville High School in 1950. Meeting with her classmates and planning reunions were joys for her.
Ma Nell worked in the Hargett Store until her retirement in 2001. She was an active member of Bethel Baptist Church where she served in many areas including church treasurer for 40 years. The number of lives she touched "serving at the crossroads" may outnumber the stars.
She loved to cook and bake. She may have served more meals than Colonel Sanders and had people from miles away begging for her special caramel cake. Ma Nell loved to quilt and crochet. Her handmade blankets have warmed many precious babies in her community.
Her legacy continues in those she leaves behind and who cherished her so, sons, Tommy Bess and his wife Jane and Ken "Doc" Bess and his wife Debbie; daughter-in-law, Mary Ellen Mills, all of Marshville; grandchildren, Brad Bess (Kendra), Jennifer Kessler (Scott), Jeremy Bess, Jarrod Bess (April), Joanna Segee, Ginny Hargette (Chris) and Joellen Moore (Shelton); great-grandchildren, Miriam Kessler, Ezekiel Kessler, Madison Bess, Daphne Bess, Grayslyn Bess, Brynlee Bess, Brystol Bess, Masyn Segee, Maddax Segee, Ian Hargette, Edyn Moore and Garrett Moore; sisters-in-law, Ella Hargett and Jean Hargett; numerous nieces and nephews.
A funeral service to celebrate the life of Nell will be 11 AM Saturday at Bethel Baptist Church with burial to follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends following the graveside in the fellowship building.
Memorials can be made to Bethel Baptist Church, PO Box 358, Marshville, NC 28103
The family would like to thank the staff at Hospice House and the sitters who made it able for her to stay at home.
