Excerpts from the Arlington Heights Herald (Arlington Heights, Illinois), dated Friday, September 16, 1949, in the Way Back When column, titled "Palatine hotel chef recalls old days." This was an article from Conrad's daughter, Minnie, recalling those early days.
He purchased a hotel and tavern in Palatine in 1870 and moved his family, including four children, from Chicago. Conrad and his wife worked hard and the business prospered. He supplied the town with their mug of beer and his wife supplied the home cooked food for their guests. The nearby barn was filled to the roof with hay to be used to feed the horses of the hotel's guests. Later a dance hall was installed in the rear of the hotel.
The first tragedy occurred when one of the Fink babies died shortly after they moved into the place by accidentally swallowing poison. Conrad passed away in 1875 at the age of 49 years.
In 1892 Conrad's wife remarried William Ahlgrimm, who passed away in 1890. In 1892 Conrad's daughter, Minnie, and her husband, Charles Seip, took over the management of the establishment.
