Mazie La Vonne Elkin (Rettig), 86, of Spencer passed away on Tuesday, August 25, 2020 at the Palo Alto County Hospital in Emmetsburg.
A graveside service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, August 28, 2020 at the Lakeview Cemetery in Spirit Lake with Rev. David Simonson Officiating.
Mazie La Vonne Eaton was born June 3, 1934 in Emmetsburg to Tennyson and Plissa (Conrad) Eaton where she was baptized in the Lutheran faith.
At the age of three her family moved to Spirit Lake, where she had grown up. It was in Spirit Lake that she found a passion for swimming and ice skating. At the age of fourteen she was confirmed at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Spirit Lake.
In 1951 she married Harold Rettig of Spirit Lake. To this union five children were born. They were married for 25 years before they were divorced in 1976. In 1978 she married Howard Elkin from Spencer. He preceded her in death in 1988.
Mazie enjoyed music, dancing and having her daughter's children around her. She loved animals and had them constantly in her life.
Mazie was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, a sister, both husbands and her oldest son Daniel.
She is survived by her children, son Dwayne (Sheri) Rettig of Lorimor, IA; son Douglas (Kimberly) Rettig of Marshalltown; son Dirk (Kim) Rettig of Lincoln, NE; daughter Dory Hudson of Spencer; 12 grandchildren, numerous great grandchildren and cousin and life long friend Kay Domek of Emmetsburg.
