They planned to spend time with sister in law Elina Borkhus. Agnes was six months pregnant and gave birth to their first child, Leif, in Wisconsin.

In 1935 he was living in Mendocino County and then by 1940 was settled in Eden Township, Hayward, Alameda County, California.
