Leaving Trondheim, Norway Elias arrived in Halifax, Canada on the Sicilian with his wife Agnes on April 6, 1904; they crossed into Vermont on their way to Stanley, Wisconsin. They planned to spend time with sister in law Elina Borkhus. Agnes was six months pregnant and gave birth to their first child, Leif, in Wisconsin.
The next two children born to Bernie were Bernhard Egil in 1907 and Ruth about 1909, they were both born in Norway. In 1911 his fourth child, Alf Reidar, was born in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. His last child, Rolf, was born in 1914 in Contra Costa County, California.
By 1920 E.B. was working as a painter and living in Contra Costa County, in the Bay Point area. He continued to live in the area until at least 1930 when he was working as a school caretaker. In 1935 he was living in Mendocino County and then by 1940 was settled in Eden Township, Hayward, Alameda County, California.
