He is the son of Gottlieb Demuth and Anna Maria Alleman. He is the husband of Catherine Susanna Schumacher, which he married in 1806 in Roxbury, Franklin Co., Pa. He and his wife are parents of six children. He and his family came to Tuscarawas, Ohio in 1832. "His grave is marked with a slab lying flat, not far from the monument to the veterans of the War of Independence and the War of 1812, and bearing the inscription, "Joseph Demuth - Died Oct 21, 1855 - Aged 80 years 7 months."
