Hugh Lawson Walker, a substantial farmer of McDonald County, Mo, residing on a farm of 150 acres of fine land in Elk River Township, was born in Barry Co, Mo on May l, 1847. He is a son of Robert (F. & Mary) Walker , a native of Rhea Co, Tenn., who came to McDonald Co., in 1842. Seven years later he went overland to California, leaving his family in McDonald County. He remained in the far West, engaged in gold mining, until 1851, when he returned to his family. During the Civil War he served in the Confederate army under Captain Hendricks, in the Stand Watie regiment, and was killed by Federal scouts while at home on furlough.

Hugh L. Walker also served in the Confederate army a short time. He joined no company, but attached himself to a militia of old men and boys, who armed without a commander, for self protection.

Mr. Walker's marriage with Mahala "Haley" Browning (1844-1904) was celebrated on February 23, 1879, (in Elk River, McDonald Co MO) and to them have been born one child whose name is Thomas Benton Walker (1871-1954). Mrs. Walker is a daughter of Alex. Browning (deceased). Mr. Walker devotes his whole attention to his farm and private affairs, and has never sought official honors.

"Mr. Hugh Walker, a highly respected citizen of Pineville and McDonald County, died Monday at his home after a lingering illness. Hugh Lawson Walker, one of the oldest native born citizens of this county, died at his home here in Pineville Monday, Dec. 15, at the age of 83 years, 7 months and 14 days. He had been in poor health for the past few years, having suffered numerous attacks of paralysis.
He was born near Rocky Comfort and had owned and operated some of the best farms of the county. About twenty-five years ago he moved to Pineville and during this time he made many friends in this community who held him in the highst esteem.
Twenty three years ago he united with the Pineville Methodidst church and remained a consistent member until his death. He is survived by his devoted wife, one son, Thomas B. Walker of Noel and one daughter, Mrs. Mary Shaw of Pineville. Interment was made in the Pineville C emetery."

Hugh bought the Walker place that Orvie Walker lives on at this time 1992.. according to Kathleen Browning, he bought it for Tom Walker to "get rid of him" he had gotten married and moved in on his dad.
