Celestine "Sally" Simon

October 3, 1927 - April 4, 2019

Celestine "Sally" Simon, 91, of Mahnomen, MN., died Thursday, April 4, 2019, at the Mahnomen Health Center, Mahnomen, MN.

Celestine M., the daughter of Emmanuel and Mary (Lovin) Flicek, was born on October 3, 1927, in Mahnomen, MN. Sally grew up in Mahnomen, where she attended St. Michael's Catholic School through 8th grade. At the tender age of 16, Sally's father passed away, and she became a primary caregiver for her mother, Mary, and younger sister, Vetaline.

Following her graduation from Mahnomen High School with the class of 1945, Sally received training at Interstate Business College, in Fargo. She quickly returned home and began doing bookwork for Priske's Hardware Store. While working there, Sally caught the eye of a regular customer, Leander "Gandy" Simon. Sally and Gandy, were united in marriage on August 27, 1957. They made their home in Mahnomen, and were blessed with two children, Steve and Sheila. After 10 years of marriage, the family was in an auto accident, which claimed Gandy's life and changed their world forever. Sally persevered, raised her children, and maintained her quick wit and sense of humor.

Sally always loved music, and in her younger years, adored dancing. She enjoyed keeping busy and spent many hours exercising, playing Bingo, and attending community events. Sally loved to get a deal and was often found perusing a rummage sale or antique store. She had many various "collections" of treasures and often restored old furniture. She was also active with the Young at Heart Senior Group and the St. Michael's Ladies Aide. Most of all, Sally treasured interacting with people. Sitting with a cup of coffee, a fresh donut, and visiting with family and friends was what she cherished the most.

Sally is survived by her son, Steven Simon of St. Louis Park, MN.; her daughter, Sheila Simon of St. Paul, MN.; her sister, Vetaline Bakken of Minnetonka, MN.; her sister in-law, Priscilla Staska of Mahnomen; as well as, many nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents; and her husband.

Funeral Mass will be held Saturday, April 6, 2019, at 2:00 p.m., at St. Michael's Catholic Church, Mahnomen, MN. Visitation will take place at Anderson Family Funeral Home, in Mahnomen, MN., Friday, April 5, 2019, from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m., with a Prayer Service at 6:30 p.m.
