Jessie Ethel Martin was born April 9, 1895, second daughter of Charles E. and Jessie E.
Martin on their farm east of Clinton, Kansas. (Farm is now under Clinton Lake.)
She attended rural school and graduated from Oread High School, Lawrence. She married Jesse E. Markley November 29, 1916. They lived on a farm in Douglas County, east of Lone Star and west of Pleasant Grove, next to George Markley.
Children:Evelyn was born October 17, 1917 at Martin grandparents farm, as was Doris on December 29, 1919. Richard was born June 25, 1923 at home.
Early December 1925 the house burned down during the night. Light snow on the ground and very little saved. The family lived with George and Dora Markley while the basement was cleaned and another house was moved on new foundation.
In 1926/27 Ethel and children moved in with Jessie Martin on west 21 first street, Lawrence, having one bedroom on second floor and a room in the basement. Later the family
moved to Osawatomie for two years, Ethel keeping house for uncle Ransler Wheeler. Moved back to 21st street, with Ethel working where she could find work, many times meaning she was home only on Sundays. Later Ethel moved with Doris and Richard into Lawrence in to two rooms. A little later, Ethel and Richard moved into a small hose with Evelyn. Ethel moved to 726 Arkansas street to live and care for her mother and sister, Ila. In 1947 she married James A. Tuggle in Lawrence. He was a local contractor and they lived in several of his houses.
One of her favorite things was raising flowers.
She passed away August 10, 1973 and is buried un Oak Hill Cemetery.
