George R. Lander, 71, of Thomas Street died at 5:05 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 4, 2003, at Heartland Health Care Center.

Born June 14, 1932, in Normal to George and Rose Schnellbacher Lander, he married Hildegard Kranz on July 14, 1956, in Berlin, Germany. She survives.

Also surviving are three sons, David (and Karen) of Bloomington, George (and Lu Anne) of Tuscaloosa, Ala., and John (and Angelyn) of Mason City, Iowa; one sister, Laura (and Joseph) Carlson of Clayton, Calif.; and five grandchildren.

He was an Army veteran.

He was a certified master gardener.

He was director and manager at the Marshall-Putnam Soil and Water Conservation District of the United States Department of Agriculture for 38 years, retiring in 1996.

He was a charter president and current president of the Henry and Indian Town Home Associations.

He also was a member and past president of the Henry Rotary Club and president of the Marshall County Heart Association.

He was a Henry Community Leader of the Year for 2001.

He was a member of First Christian Church in Henry, where he was an elder emeritus.
