Merie Mohelnitzky was born on June 15, 1912, at her parent's home in Germantown, Richland County, Wisconsin. She was the youngest of four daughters born to Mary Fastner Mohelnitzky and Conrad Mohelnitzky. Mary and Conrad ran the general store in Germantown. Merie was baptized by Rev. H. Van Den Berg on June 23, 1912, at St. Anthony de Padua Catholic Church in Germantown. Sponsors were her step-grandfather George Milfred and grandmother Mary Ruskauff Mohelnitzky Milfred.

At age 19, Merie was married to Anton Blau on September 30, 1931, by Rev. A. J. Daniels at St. Anthony de Padua Catholic Church, Germantown, Richland County, Wisconsin. Witnesses were Anton's brother George Blau, and friend Dorothy LaRue. Anton and Merie had 9 children.

They farmed on the Blau home farm north of Plain until 1962 when they sold their farm. After a short stay in California, Anton and Merie moved to Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, in 1963 where Anton worked as a caretaker at the Fond du Lac County Home. In 1971, they moved to an apartment above their son's meat market in Saukville, Wisconsin, and stayed there until 1976 after which they moved to an apartment in the Village of Plain, Wisconsin.
