Everett Nelson Leonard, 97, a former resident of Roseland, N.J., passed away on Saturday, Dec. 4, 2010, at Crane's Mill Retirement Community, West Caldwell, N.J., surrounded by his loving family.

Visiting is in the Farmer Funeral Home, 45 Roseland Ave. (at Eagle Rock Ave.), Roseland, on Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral service in the Roseland Methodist Church, 144 Eagle Rock Ave., Roseland, is on Friday at 10 a.m. Interment will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Caldwell. Everett's life was characterized by love of family, church, community and country. His favorite hobbies were reading, classical music and genealogy. He spent many hours with his cousin, Grace Leonard Millspaugh, studying family history.

After graduating from Grover Cleveland High School, Caldwell, Everett joined Henry Becker & Son Farm advancing during his 30-year tenure to Becker Dairy sales manager.

In World War II, he served as an Area Civil Defense Coordinator.

Everett was fully engaged in public service. He was a past president of the Roseland Men's Club. He served as a borough of Roseland councilman from 1951 to 1959 and was appointed as the borough's first administrator in 1966. He went on to serve as the Verona Township administrator (1970 to 1977).

Everett was a founding member and first president of the Roseland Rotary Club. The club recognized his accomplishments with a Paul Harris Fellow award. He was the Roseland Senior Citizen of the Year in 1990. Everett was a founding member of the Roseland Public Library and Roseland Historical Society. He was instrumental in the acquisition of the landmark Harrison House. His wealth of historical knowledge made him a sought-after community resource. Everett was on the board of directors of West Essex Saving Bank (now Kearny Federal Savings). He was an active member of the Roseland Methodist Church for many years.

He was the beloved son of the late Belle Love and John Nelson Leonard.

Everett was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Theresa E. Hilgreen, sister, Sophronia Lynch, and brother, Douglas Leonard. He is survived by his sister, Muriel McGaw of Midland, Mich.; children, Brenda Wambough (John) of Fort Walton Beach, Fla., Linda Glaeser (Bill) of Seattle, Wash., Jill Newman - Whittle (Walt) of Fremont, Ohio, Bruce Leonard of Riverside, R.I., and Richard Leonard (LeeAnn) Roseland, and 12 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Family requests donations in lieu of flowers to Leonard Family Fund at the Roseland Library or Atlantic Home Care & Hospice of Millburn.
