Christian Biography

Doris Iola Parkhurst, eldest child of Bertha Mae (White) and Otha Waring Bowen, was born on February 23, 1916 in Harrison County, MO and departed this life on August 10, 2009.

As a child she attended the Lone Rock and Shady Grove Country Schools.

In 1932 she married Clarence Howard Parkhurst and to this union 12 children were born, Donna Irene, Marvin Rex, Icel Nadeen, Kathryn Elouise, Ruby Marcene, Evelyn Leora, Sandra Kay, Theola Pauline and Erma Christine, Lyle Keith, Richard Neil and Roena Faye. She has 44 grandchildren, 105 great-grandchildren and 113 great-great-grandchildren.

The family lived in Harrison County for most of their married life other than a short span over the Iowa line and near Marshaltown, IA.

Clarence died in 1999 just before their 68th wedding anniversary.

Doris' life consisted of many hardships and lots of tiring work as she cared for her large family. She always raised a very large garden and canned and froze large quantities of food every year. She and Clarence continued to do this every year even after all the children were out of the home. There were always prepared in case one of the children were going through a hardship and might have need of it. Every year they shared potatoes, sweet potatoes, strawberries and many other garden vegetables with their children.

Doris sewed all of her children's clothing and even made mittens and gloves from old woolen coats and pants that were hand-me-downs from neighbors, friends or members of the extended family. In her later years she made many items of clothing for the grandkids and Oh! the quilts. There is no way to know the number of quilts she made and gave to her children and grandchildren. She also took in sewing for many people around the Eagleville area.

A few years after her last child was born she began working in Eagleville in the different cafes. She worked as a cook at the Old North Station, she operated the Skylark Café for a while and worked for Pauline Cook in her café on the Eagleville square. Her last job was at the Blythedale Café where she fell and broke both legs at the same time. This ended her working career.

Doris always had the greatest patience and was always very self-sacrificing when it came to her children. She raised most of them during the depression and there weren't many material possessions. She entertained them by quoting poems and singing songs that she herself had learned at her mother's knee.

Doris didn't get to socialize hardly at all because of all the myriads of work that had to be done. She didn't get to church herself but saw to it that her children went to church and Sunday school. She always talked of a higher power and when asked if she knew the Lord as her personal savior, her reply was a very positive "yes" and she was satisfied as to where she would be after her earthly life was over.

Doris never said an unkind word against anyone and if she heard others do so, she always counter-acted with something good about that person.

Preceding her in death were her parents, Otha and Bertha Bowen; her husband, Clarence; one son, Lyle Kieth; 3 grandchildren, Ronnie Dean McLain, Sheryl (McLain) Johnson and Larry Neil Tull; 3 great-grandchildren, Michael Scott Cook, Misty Dawn Clevenger and Wesley Tyrel Osborn; daughter-in-law, Neva Elaine Parkhurst; son-in-law, Darryl McLain; brother, Audrey Bowen and sister, Jessie Williams.

Left to mourn her passing are her children, Marvin Parkhurst, Mt. Moriah, MO, Richard (Judy) Parkhurst, Urbandale, IA, Donna (Willie) Tull, Eagleville, MO, Nadeen (Doyle) Nigh, Ruby (Howard) Osborn, Leora McLain and Roena (Tim) Collins, all of Bethany, MO, Kathryn Henderson, Hamilton, MO, Sandra (LeRoy) Lynch, Summerville, WV, Pauline (Stan) Palmer and Erma (Jim) Perry of Burlington, IA. Two sisters, Maxine Parkhurst, Bethany, MO and Edna Johnson, Des Moines, IA; brother, Deryle Bowen, Morehead, IA; 44 grandchildren and their spouses, 105 great-grandchildren and their spouses, 113 great-great-grandchildren, plus many nieces and nephews and several step-grandchildren.
