Benjamin Franklin Barnes is the son of Benjamin Ezekiel Barnes and Mahala Jean Asbill. Born in Missouri, he and his family moved to Arkansas and later Texas. He was working as a laborer in Texas when he married Lizzie Cooper on Nov 28, 1880. Together they had 4 living children and many happy years together. Benjamin continued working as a farmer for the rest of his life. Though he had no formal education, he was reportedly great at math and his wife taught him to write.
