Billy Joe "Joe" Smith, age 78, passed away peacefully at his residence on August 9, 2020. Joe was born on the family farm, 16 November 1941 in Knox Co., Tennessee to Vernal and Mary Kate (Moats-DeFord) Smith. He attended Karns High School and was a member of Bon View Baptist Church in Knoxville, TN.. At the age of 19, He was electrocuted at 4:45PM, working in a silo on the Mascot Farm. A country doctor opened his chest with a pocket knife and having to do open heart massage at the accident site revived him. His first breath on his own was taken around 6:00PM that day at St. Mary's Hospital. Joe was a resident of the hospital for 57 days before he was able to go home to his family.

His family is very thankful for the many wonderful years they had with him and all the memories they made as a family. Joe was an incredible husband to Shirley Maxine (Sands) and wonderful Step-father to Shirley's daughters, Joy Lynn and Dorothy.

He loved playing golf, going for walks, spending time with his family and friends and eating out at any of the local Cracker Barrel's. Joe was one of a kind and will be remembered for his kindness and love for all.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents Vernal William & Mary Kate (Moats-DeFord) Smith, his brothers, Bobby Smith, Vernal Jack Smith, John Henry DeFord Sr, James Nelson Casteel born (Horace Scott DeFord), Willie Vurchell DeFord, his sister's, Mamie L. Smith-Duncan, Dorothy Katherine Smith-Kagley, Janice June Smith-Newcomb, baby girl smith and his only child Michael Joseph Smith.

He is survived by his only granddaughter; Amanda Smith; two Great grandchildren, Calem & Colton Smith; and many nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Sunday, August 23, 2020 from 4-6 p.m. at McCarty Evergreen Funeral Home. Service will follow at 6:00 p.m. with Rev. Louis Branch officiating. Family and friends will meet at McCarty Evergreen Funeral Home on Monday, August 24, 2020 at 2:00 p.m. and leave in procession to Valley View Cemetery for a 3:00 p.m. graveside service.
