Published in The Paducah Sun (McCracken Co., KY), Thursday, September 25,2008 - WEST FRANKFORT, Ill. — Alvin Rudell Bess, 87, of West Frankfort, formerly of Metropolis, passed away Saturday, September 20, 2008, at 9:29 p.m. at Barnes Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, Mo.

Funeral services will be Friday, September 26, 2008, at 1 p.m. at Aikins- Farmer Funeral Home with Pastor Alan Osment officiating and burial will follow in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery.

Alvin is survived by one son, Rudy Bess and wife Beverly Lukens Bess of Hazelwood, Mo.; one grandson, Jeffrey Bess of St. Peters, Mo; one great-granddaughter, Andrea Jumper of Belleville, Ill.; two sisters, Valora Bess- Larrison of Metropolis and Marie Bess-Faulkner of Athens.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Oliver Ernest and Eva Elizabeth (Maedaker) Bess; his wife of 58 years, Eulonda (Cash) Bess; two sisters, Ruth Bess-Schneeman and Hilda Bess-Jennings; and two brothers, Trois Bess and Charles Bess.

Mr. Bess enjoyed restoring old antique engines, his last restoration was in 2007. It was a 1923 model T Ford. He and his wife enjoyed traveling and visiting friends. He also went to antique engine shows in Kentucky, Illinois and Indiana.
He was a member of the New Life Baptist Church in Florissant, Mo., and attended the Church of God in West Frankfort for the past 5 years.

He was very immaculate, everything had its place, his house and clothes were always in order. He was a beloved husband, father, son, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and a lasting and dear friend to all he met. He enjoyed reading, gospel quartet music and watching Lawrence Welk.

He supported the I.O.O.F. Cemetery, Hope Light Foundation and the Metropolis Hope Light Project.
