Darlene (Tootie) Von Minden was born June 23, 1925, on a farm in rural Allen, Neb., to Charles (Bob) and Alma (Schroeder) Ellis. She attended Allen Consolidated Schools, graduating in 1942. She graduated with normal training and taught in a country school outside of Allen.

On Feb. 22, 1944, she married Harold Von Minden at Trinity Lutheran Church in Martinsburg. She was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran. They had four children: Steve, Jan, Nikki and Kim.

After Harold returned from his service in World War II, they farmed and fed cattle and hogs in the Martinsburg area until 1981, when they retired and moved into Martinsburg. They received a Pioneer Farm Award in 1979 for the original Koeppe farm being in the family for more than 100 years.

Darlene worked at Atokad Race Track in South Sioux City for more than 20 years.

Harold died on Sept. 8, 2009. She continued to live in Martinsburg until shortly before her death.

She was a Sunday school teacher and member of the LWML at Trinity Lutheran Church. She was a 4-H leader for many years and member of Ponca American Legion Auxiliary Post 117. She was an avid reader, enjoyed playing cards in a canasta club and at the Ponca Senior Citizen Center, watching golf on TV (especially Tiger), doing water aerobics and enjoyed an occasional trip to the casino. Darlene and Harold were faithful attendees at their children's, grandchildren's and great-grandchildren's many events. Her family enjoyed having coffee and eating homemade rolls at her house every Saturday morning.
