Just 53, Dick was stuck down by heart disease leaving his widow, June (51) and son John (18) and daughter Lorna Jean (14) as well as his married eldest daughter Beverly (Beard). He was the son of Elmer and Ardella (Baughan) Shepler. He had worked as an accountant gaining some public notice as a "too honest" civil servant when employed as a state auditor during the Michigan liquor control scandal of the mid 1940's. He went on to build a satisfying solo practice as a certified public accountant.
