A prayer and scripture service for Esther B. Paxton, 83, Lawrence, will be at 7 p.m. today at Warren-McElwain Mortuary in Lawrence with the Rev. Grantland Clowers officiating. Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Lone Star Cemetery in Pretty Prairie.

Mrs. Paxton died Saturday at her home.

Born July 25, 1906, in Pretty Prairie, Mrs. Paxton moved to Lawrence in 1936 and became the guardian of five of the seven children in her family after the death of her parents.

Mrs. Paxton was a well-known piano teacher in Lawrence and received her bachelor's degree in piano from Kansas University in 1928.

She was a member of the Trinity Episcopal Church, and a 50-year member of the Adah Chapter No. 7 of the Order of the Eastern Star in Lawrence.

Mrs. Paxton also was a member of the Delta Gamma social sorority at KU, the Lawrence Music Club, the National Guild of Piano Teachers, the KU Alumni Association and Mu Phi Epsilon Music Sorority.

Mrs. Paxton married Edwin M. Paxton on June 22, 1935, in St. Charles, Mo. He died April 24, 1965.

Survivors include four sisters, Irene Miller, Shawnee Mission, Helen Ossmann, Topeka, Geraldine Smith, Larned, and Carol Francis, Lawrence; and a brother, Everett Buhler, Lawrence.

A family visitation will follow the service tonight until 9 p.m. at Warren-McElwain Mortuary.

The family suggests memorials to the Trinity Episcopal Church Music Fund. They may be sent in care of the mortuary.
