Anita Mae Baker

AUGUST 20, 1927 – AUGUST 1, 2020

Anita was born on August 20, 1927 in Medford, Oklahoma to Charles Daniel and Naomi May Loop.

She grew up in Brownsville, Texas, the oldest of 6 children. She graduated El Jardin High School in 1944, after that she attended Texas A & I. She worked as a climatologist for the Weather Bureau, where she met the love of her life, Harold Baker. They married on Dec. 4, 1948. After the wedding, they moved to California for Harold’s job as a meteorologist, but returned to Texas in 1951 and settled in the Houston area where they raised their three children.

Anita was a homemaker and very involved in her church and the PTA. She was a deaconess and elder at Kirkwood South Christian Church, and a member of the Christian Woman’s Fellowship and enjoyed playing chicken foot with the church’s retired group. She was in the choir, a Sunday school teacher, and taught Children’s Church. While raising her children, she was always a room mother and in the PTA, always volunteering where needed.

She loved the beach, crabbing, and lighthouses. She grew the most beautiful roses and hibiscus. She also painted and played the piano. In 1977, she went to work as a Library Aide at Pearland High School. She loved being around the kids. She and Harold retired in 1981, and enjoyed traveling together. After Harold passed away in 1988, Anita kept traveling with family members and church friends. Anita was the best grandmother to her four grandkids, always making time to play and have fun with them.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Harold, sister Doris, brothers Charles and Dale, and her daughter Celeste Wilkinson.

She is survived by her son Michael Baker and his wife Mary Beth, her daughter Teresa Dedman and her husband Randy, her grandson Alexander Baker, her granddaughter Lauren Baker, her grandson Jesse Dedman and his wife Jennifer, her granddaughter Charly Irvin and her husband Dustin, her two great-grandsons Wyatt Dedman and Brian Irvin, and her two great-granddaughters Emma Mae Irvin and Evalyn Dedman.
