Art Amos — son, husband, father, and grandfather — passed away at home on June 6, 2020, in the company of his wife and elder son, from brain trauma after a fall.
Born June 2, 1942 at Fort Huachuca, Ariz., he was the second child of Col. Arthur K. Amos and Hope G. Amos. A true Army brat, Art’s formative years took him around the world. His family was among the first Americans in occupied Japan; his middle-school years were in post-war occupied Austria; and he graduated from high school in Bangkok, Thailand. His undergraduate education in the U.S. included a semester at University of the Philippines while visiting his parents. He earned a Ph.D. in English from the University of Oregon, where he met and married Jacqueline Donnell, his wife of 54 years.
A man of many interests, Art was an English professor, statistical analyst and systems administrator at UC Davis, and writing instructor and photographer at the UC Sacramento Center. He was a longtime contributing writer for The Davis Enterprise, first as a movie critic, then as weekly reviewer of mystery novels in his column “The Locked Room.” A dedicated blood donor, he gave plasma twice a week and earned many “Give Blood” T-shirts for his hundreds of blood and plasma donations. He played tennis and squash into his 70s. He devoted many hours to rescuing friends from computer problems. An avid bridge player from his college years, for much of his retirement he played bridge and ran a bridge club through the Davis Senior Center and at URC. He was an ACBL Life Master.
His parents and two siblings preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife Jacki, two sons, Kirk (Yvonne) and Jeremy (Karen), and granddaughters Kate and Bess. The family gives thanks for the doctors and nurses at Kaiser Vacaville and Vallejo who strove to heal him, Yolo Hospice nurses making it possible for him to die at home with family, and the invaluable support of many friends and neighbors.
