Eugene Barnes
Eugene C. Barnes, 88, of Mount Pleasant, died Sunday, Sept. 2, 2007, at Henry County Health Center in Mount Pleasant.
Born Dec. 1, 1918, in Coolidge, Texas, he was the son of Ollie and Virgie Hudson Barnes.
Mr. Barnes was raised in California. He graduated from Fortuna High School, Fortuna, Calif. On Aug. 10, 1976, he married Beulah Toney in Pacifica, Calif. She died in September of 1993.
He enlisted in the Navy in 1942. He was assigned as a gunner on the USS Helena and was one of the survivors when it was sunk. He was briefly assigned to the USS Roosevelt. He was honorably discharged as a Seaman 1st Class on Dec. 5, 1945, in Shoemaker, Calif.
He worked in the shipping department of Van Waters & Rogers, a chemical company in San Francisco. He moved to Mount Pleasant when his wife returned to her home due to poor health. Mr. Barnes was a member of Faith Christian Outreach Church and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 2561 of Mount Pleasant.
Survivors include one stepson, Glen Toney of Lancaster, Calif.; one stepdaughter, Donna Wise of Mount Pleasant; eight step-grandchildren; several step-great-grandchildren; and step-great-great-grandchildren.
Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, one stepdaughter, one sister and one step-grandchild.
Visitation will be from noon to 7 p.m. today at Weir and Kimzey Funeral Home in Mount Pleasant. There will be no family visitation. The funeral for Mr. Barnes will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Forest Home Cemetery in Mount Pleasant with the Rev. Gary VanNyhuis officiating. Burial will follow with full military honors conducted by the Henry County Honor Guard.
