Mrs. Susan Rowden Claimed by Death

Mrs. Susan Rowden, 71, died Wednesday, August 20, at the home of her son, Lee Rowden, at Emmaus, 10 miles south of Troup. Her earth came as a severe shock to her family and friends, as she was apparently in fairly good health for one of her advanced age, at the time of her death. Relatives found her dead in the bed where she went earlier in the day after telling the family she was going to rest herself for awhile.

Funeral services were conducted at Griffin cemetery Thursday afternoon, August 21, by the Rev. J. S. Jones, Baptist, of Blackjack. Mrs. Rowden had been a member of the Baptist church for 34 years.

The Rowden family had lived in the Troup section for more than 30 years, coming here from near Wills Point, in Van Zandt County. Mrs. Rowden’s husband died in 1894.

She is survived by three sons, Carl, Lee and Tom Rowden, all of Emmaus; four daughters, Mrs. Fred Hudspeth, Mrs. Maris Evands, and Mrs. Joe Cox, all of Griffin, and Mrs. Carl Nesbitt of Palestine. Surviving also are three sisters, Mrs. Nan Lytle of Mineola, Mrs. Addie Morefield of New Mexico and Mrs. Ella Hitt of Tyler; and one brother, Miller Thompson of Chandler. Twenty-five grandchildren and six great grandchildren survive.

The Tyler Journal (Tyler, Tex.), Vol. 6, No. 18, Ed. 1 Friday, August 29, 1930.
