Local Humanitarian, A. P. Holiman Dies

Montgomery County humanitarian, Allen P. Holiman, 77, of Winona died Saturday, June 16, of cancer at Kilmichael Hospital. Holiman was well known in area for his kindness to animals. An article printed in the January 4, 1990 edition of The Winona Times quoted Holiman, I feel animals are just like persons; they ought to be seen after I do what I can".

Many people felt that Holiman did more than his share in support of his favorite charity, The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

In 1989 Holiman, a retired car salesman from near Kilmichael, spent $1,687 to get medical care for cats and dogs which either were stays or belonged to someone else.

Holiman often bought large amounts of cat and dog food and distributed it to hungry animals living in the areas he traveled during his work as a collections agent for Builders Lumber Company and for Fidelity Underwriters of Winona.

Holiman said that he had always loved animals and that he liked helping things unable to help themselves.

Holiman seldom traveled anywhere without his constant companion, a tiny dog named PeeWee Vance who, not surprisingly considering Holiman's kindness to strangers, did not belong to him but to Pauline Vance, who had worked for Holiman.

Holiman did own five cats and four dogs all of which, as he advocated, were spayed or neutered.

For years Holiman was a heavy drinker. In recent years, however, he would spend the money he used to spend on alcohol on the animals or on charities such as St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital and Children's Home in Jackson.

Funeral services were held at 4 p.m. Monday, June 18, 1990 at Oliver Chapel, with the Rev. B.C. Nunn officiating. Burial was in Oakwood Cemetery with Oliver Funeral Home of Winona in charge.

Pallbearers were Steve Vance, John L. Baskin, L.C. Bryan, Bill Liston, Barksdale Garner and George Harris, Sr.

Honorary pallbearers were Judge J.P. Coleman, Dr. L.C. Henson and Billy Flowers.

He is survived by one brother James Paul Holiman of San Antonio, Texas and several nieces and nephews. He was a US Army Veteran from World War II.
