Farmed and worked turpentine as a young man and father. Joined the Navy with his brother Bert before the war started with Japan. He was aboard the battleship USS West Virginia at Pearl Harbor when it was attacked Dec. 7, 1941. Was injured when a bomb hit and went through the deck near where he was stationed, but did not explode. He worked hard all his life and was skilled in all crafts and being ambidextrious, was able to work with ease with both hands. This was a result of an injury to his hand in a cane grind when young and having to quickly learn to use his other hand, during the healing process on the injured hand. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, having died the day before hunting season on a private tract of land in Camden County, while going to erect his deer stand for the next day opening.
