He was wounded in WWI (in those days it was called "shell-shock")and never really recovered. My mother, his niece, often told me stories about how he used to cut, collect and sell wood and would let her ride around town on the pony cart he used for hauling the wood. When questioned about his war experience, he would only say "I may not be what I was, but at least I came home alive" (a reference to his many friends and family members who did not). He died the 14th of Oct 1944 in the Army-Navy Hospital in Hot Springs, Garland Co, AR where he was being cared for by his sister Clara Frank Clower.
