John Leavitt was a private in Captain John Harmon's 8th Company of the 19th Regiment of Connecticut Militia under the Command of Col. Erastus Wolcott in 1776. According to the "Record of service of Connecticut men in the I. War of the Revolution, II. War of 1812, III. Mexican War" by Connecticut. Adjutant-General's Office; Johnston, Henry Phelps, 1842-1923, "During the re-organization of the Continental force before Boston, Dec., '75-Feb., '76, when the soldiers were coming and going Washington called for regiments from the New England States to guard the lines at various points until the new army had been well established. Connecticut sent three regiments under Col. James Wadsworth, Erastus Wolcott, and John Douglass. They reached Boston toward the end of January and remained about six weeks. [It is believed, John Leavitt, Jr] formed a part of the detachment from the army that occupied Boston after the enemy evacuated the town."
