An annotation to his records indicate that he was a free person before the war. He was wounded in action near Fair Oaks, VA, on 27 Oct 1864. Reported as "absent wounded" since 27 Oct 1864 and hospitalized in the General Hospital at Fort Monroe, VA. He was discharged from that hospital on 24 Jun 1865. Also borne as Phillip Burlin.
