Born in Laurens County, she is the last living of six children born to the late Henry and Addie Lee Holmes Thigpen. She and her siblings grew up in the Orianna Community where she met Soperton native, Frank Mullis; who ran a route delivering ice from the Ice plant in Soperton. They married in 1939 and had a son, David, in 1945. Mr. Mullis owned and operated the ice plant for several years prior to his passing in 1962. After her husband passed away Mrs. Mullis worked at various businesses in the area, to include the Soperton Shirt Factory, Fowler’s Freezer Locker, Rick’s IGA, and Smith’s Department Store. Mrs. Mullis retired in 1978 and pursued her love of yard work and tending her flowers.
She had been a member of Orianna Baptist Church and the First Baptist Church of Soperton.
In addition to her parents and husband, she is preceded in death by her sisters, Alma Youngblood, Robbie Avery, Wastene Thigpen, Ruby Thigpen; her only brother, Holmes Thigpen; and a grandson, Anthony “Tony” Mullis.
She leaves behind her son, David Mullis and his wife, Linda, Live Oak, FL; a granddaughter, Emily Garner and her husband, USAF Lt. Col. Michael Garner, Valdosta; great-grandchildren, Lauren, Breanne and Matthew Garner; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted at 10:30 am on Wednesday, July 22nd from the graveside in Westview Cemetery with Reverend Mark Sweat and Reverend Chad Cofield officiating. Mrs. Mullis will be laid to rest beside her husband. Her family will receive friends on Wednesday at the graveside from 10:00 am until the hour of service.
